Greetings from Massachusetts – I’m up here for some business meetings. Today’s recipient needs no introduction, but I thought I would share this little nugget of information. Did you know that the former star of The Office had a short-lived stint as rural mail carrier while he was living here in Massachusetts. Yep, and he drove his own car around reaching over to try to shove letters in mailboxes. He lasted four months…months later he said he found some undelivered mail under his seat! Hopefully my letter makes it to him.

Carell Day 7-5

Dear Steve,

Happy New Year!

I was in Newton, Mass today and understand you grew up here. I didn’t go looking for your childhood home or anything stalker-like, but I was reminded of something you once said – or at least the internet says you said it, “Sending a handwritten letter is becoming such an anomaly. It’s disappearing. My mom is the only one who still writes me letters. And there’s something visceral about opening a letter – I see her on the page. I see her in her handwriting.” My mother passed away in 2006, but when I read old letters from her it’s like she’s there, visiting with me. I see it in her letters, like the way she’d make her lowercase “r”. I can hear her voice. Anyway, I’m a fan of your craft and that statement of yours touched me.

Here’s to handwritten letters,
Reed Sandridge

PS. I look forward to seeing Foxcatcher – I look forward to seeing it!
