Day 66: Michele

You may recall that on Day 50 I wrote a letter to Anthony – a friend that I met five years ago. Anthony has had a difficult life and worked hard to get off the street and into housing. This July – he will celebrate two years of being housed as well as his 58th birthday..so I am trying to organize a little surprise for him. Keep your fingers crossed!

Dear Michele,

Thank you so much for taking time to speak with me on Thursday about creating something special for my friend Anthony. He is truly the mayor of the area in DC called the Golden Triangle – everyone that walks by his corner at 19th and M knows him – and if you didn’t know better you’d think you were blocks away from Heinz field given all of his Steeler swag! I look forward to circling back with you in July to see where things stand – actually that timing is perfect as his birthday is July 29th and if we can work something out then I will present this to him for his birthday. Until then – enjoy your spring.

Day 36: Brian, Paper Source

This is what I bought at Paper Source!

I’m embarrassed to say that this isn’t everything that I bought at Paper Source!

I visited Paper Source in Georgetown for the first time. I can’t believe I have never been there. Amazing store full of wonderful paper, craft and gift products. I found so many terrific items there…I was like a kid in a candy shop! I’ll definitely be back. Brian, the assistant manager, was extremely knowledgable and helpful – we need more professionals in retail like him!

Day 19: Kimon

Thank you notes are always better when handwritten. It shows that it meant enough to you that you spent the extra time time to show them you care. I’ve been friends with Kimon since high school. Friday, he gave me an early birthday present: a bottle of District Made Vodka and a Washington Nationals koozie. Both are much appreciated and will definitely be enjoyed.

And check out the numbering on the bottle – I’ve got one of the first 500 bottles ever made by this new distillery!

Day 12: Lieu

Lieu-2Good morning! If you’re waking up in the Northeast it’s probably a bit nasty outside. We’ve got some icy conditions here in DC. Be careful.

Today’s letter is to a wonderful woman who does some work for me from time to time. Originally from Vietnam, she’s lived in the Washington area for almost 40 years. She is tiny, probably about 5 feet tall, but her heart is enormous. She’s always doing small acts of kindness – like last week she brought me the most delicious blueberry muffins and some oranges along with a handwritten note. Thank you Lieu!

Day 5: A.R. and Aimee

A.R. and Aimee are good friends of mine. Aimee and I go way back to seventh grade French class.

They were married in October of 2013 and I had the honor of officiating their wedding. Maybe it was the shots of Fireball that A.R. provided or perhaps I was just really nervous to preside over a marriage when I myself, who have never been married, obviously don’t know a lot about what it means to be married, but I realized a few months ago that I may not have given them a gift. And when I say gift, I mean a check, because so often I don’t really know what to give couples, but money seems to always be appreciated.

Anyway, I checked some things and it seems I really didn’t give them a gift at the time…or if I did, I don’t have any recollection of it. So, here you go…better late than never.

Happy New Year to you both!

A few months ago I was reviewing my 2013 taxes and finances and realized I don’t think I ever gave you a wedding gift?! I thought I remembered putting a card in the box that was set up on your wedding day, but I don’t see any cancelled check on my bank statements and I don’t think I would have just put cash in an envelope, so here is your belated wedding present.

I know proper etiquette says that this is too late, but that’s a load of crap. It’s worse to never give the gift than to give it late.
