Day 302: Steven Weitzman

I found out that the artist of one of my favorite pieces of art in our nation’s capital, literally in the Capitol, lives just a few miles outside of the District. I thought I’d let him know that his beautifully crafted bronze statue of Frederick Douglass inspires me every time I see it.

Day 302-3

Steven,

As a resident of our nation’s capital, I’m accustomed to walking by monuments and statues. I cruise down hallways of some of the most iconic buildings in America and don’t stop to appreciate the artistry on display.

I created this tree on the front of the card, then realized I wrote the card upside down so the tree seems like it's on the back of the card!

Often times when I do take an interest in a piece of art or the masterfully painted ceiling, I am unaware of the artist or if I do find out who it was, they’re more than likely deceased. So when I learned that you were the creator of the Frederick Douglass bronze statue that captivates visitors to the U.S. Capitol, I wanted to write you to let you know that your work moved me. Its beauty and power are striking, doing tremendous justice to one of the most charismatic and influential leaders in our history. Brilliant!

With great admiration,
Reed Sandridge

P.S. Ooops – I just realized I wrote this upside down.

Day 301: Anonymous letter left at Starbucks in Kingsport, TN

I’ve been in Kingsport visiting family and I left this letter with some cash inside at the Starbucks on North Eastman Road.

Day 301

Hello there!

Just a little note to brighten your day – this coffee is on me.

Day 300: Ronda

Another handmade card and envelope.

Another handmade card and envelope.

I made it to Day 300!!!

Today’s letter is to my cousin’s wife Ronda. She recently finished her PhD program focusing on the intersection of post-secondary education and first-generation Appalachian students. It’s an academic accomplishment that I don’t believe I could achieve. A few years ago I had the opportunity to meet one of the top environmental scientists in the country. Talking about his PhD work, I recall him saying, “If I knew how long and hard it was going to be, I would have never pursued it.”

Congratulations Ronda!

Day 300

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
-M. K. Gandhi

Ronda,

Completing your doctoral degree is remarkable – it speaks to your dedication, commitment and curiosity for the unknown. Education, both formal and informal, is an important part of what makes life meaningful. We learn to be open-minded. We share what we learn with others and pass down our knowledge to future generations – it’s the soul of society.

Congratulations,
Jason

Day 293: Steve Wozniak

Birthday card to my Dad from Steve Wozniak!

You may recall that back on Day 236 I wrote Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak asking him to send my father a letter on his 75th birthday. I didn’t think this would happen – I had tried back on his 71st birthday – but I was wrong.

He didn’t write much, but it meant a lot to my Dad. I thought that was so cool of Woz and wanted to write to him to let him know how grateful I am for his kindness.

Day 293-3

Woz,

Thank you so much for sending my father a birthday card on his 75th birthday – it made his day. You’re a classy guy. Thank you.

Keep on creating!

Reed

P.S. My brother and his wife and I bought my dad the Apple watch for his birthday – so far he likes it. I can’t help but be curious about what you think about it.

Day 292: Kerry

Day 292-2As a board member of a local nonprofit, I occasionally meet with potential funders. I recently had the pleasure of meeting a board member from a family foundation that was interested in learning more about Street Sense, an organization I have been supporting for several years. I wanted to drop Kerry a note to thank her for taking time to meet with us and learn more about the incredible work that Street Sense is doing in Washington, D.C.

Day 292

Kerry,

It was wonderful to meet with you last Wednesday and share some of the work that Street Sense is doing to change the lives of men and women experiencing homelessness. It’s been one of the most inspiring organizations I have ever had the opportunity to work with. Please feel free to contact me if I can help in any way.

Sincerely,
Reed Sandridge
