Day 43: A letter to Jesus

That’s Jesús taking an order for pick up.

No, this is not a letter to that Jesus…it’s a letter to Jesús – my favorite taquero. If you are in the DC area you have to try Jesús’ tacos. I lived in Mexico for a year and Tacos El Chilango is the real deal. If you have any doubt, check them out on Yelp.com – I kid you not that this truck has the highest rating of all restaurants in Arlington County. That’s insane – and awesome all in one. I love these guys – they are part responsible for my overall happiness in DC and also part responsible for the 15 pounds I can’t seem to lose.

You can find Jesús at the corner of 14th Street N. and N. Quinn Street every day but Sunday. Jesús’ brother Juan Antonio has opened a brick and mortar shop at 1119 V St NW which is the same, actually it has a bit more expanded menu, but I still prefer the truck.

Dear Jesús,

I wanted to send you a letter to tell you that you have the best tacos! I think that this month marks 5 years since the first time I visited the truck. The meat is always tasty – cut just the way they do in Mexico. The diced onion and fresh cilantro (and cucumber slices) complete each taco. They’re delicious and authentic. You and your team always are kind and treat your guests like friends. Even my Dad, who lives in Pennsylvania, asks about you guys.

Day 35: A Letter to Jayson Werth

I’m a huge Nationals fan. Two months ago today Washington Nationals’ right fielder Jayson Werth was convicted of reckless driving for cruising around in his Porsche at over 100 mph on the Capital Beltway last summer.

A judge sentenced him to serve five days in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. He’s been serving it over the weekends so that he can attend to his physical therapy for a shoulder surgery he had in early January. I figure he’s got some time to do some reading while he’s in jail – that is if he’s not swamped signing autographs – see this story.

I left him my number too. You never know he might get bored in there and I’d welcome a call from the Nats slugger – collect of course. I’ll keep you posted.

I know you have to spend a few days here so I thought I would drop you a note. I figured you might have time to actually read my letter while you are serving your sentence.

I’m a big fan of you and the Nationals – although I got to be honest, one of my favorite memories of you (if not my favorite) is from when you were with the Phillies. May 12, 2009 when you stole 2nd, 3rd and then home! That was awesome. Game 4 in 2012 was probably more amazing though – the stadium went nuts after you hit that walk-off homer against Lance Lynn. I wasn’t there – I was there though for game 5 – we won’t talk about that.

Anyway, we’re less than three weeks away from the start of Spring Training. I hope your shoulder rehab goes well so that you can get back to baseball as soon as you’re healthy enough to play.

I have some free time – I guess that’s obvious given this letter – so if there is anything I can ever do to help out you and/or the team, let me know, it would be a dream come true.

Oh, and I read on the Fairfax Detention Ctr. website that you can make collect phone calls. If you are bored and you can’t reach your family and you need a break from signing Inmate Handbooks – feel free to give me a call. You can call me collect at xxx.xxx.xxxx.

Day 19: Kimon

Thank you notes are always better when handwritten. It shows that it meant enough to you that you spent the extra time time to show them you care. I’ve been friends with Kimon since high school. Friday, he gave me an early birthday present: a bottle of District Made Vodka and a Washington Nationals koozie. Both are much appreciated and will definitely be enjoyed.

And check out the numbering on the bottle – I’ve got one of the first 500 bottles ever made by this new distillery!

Day 13: Ken

I met today’s recipient five years ago today. A proud and stalwart salesman of the Street Sense newspaper in DC, I’ve stayed in touch with him ever since meeting him through my Year of Giving project. You can read about the day we met and see a photo of Ken in action selling the paper here.

Today marks five years since we met at the Dupont Circle metro stop at the corner of 20th and Q. Your passion and enthusiasm for Street Sense, your customers and soccer all inspire me to be passionate about things in my own life. I know you’ve experienced great challenges in your life, but you face them with strength and optimism and I admire that. Day 9: John Watson, Walgreens

It was Thanksgiving 2013 and I needed to get some customized photo pruducts made quickly and one of the only places in DC that you has the type of machine required for my project was at Walgreens – and not just any Walgreens, only at the bright and shinny one up on Connecticut Avenue near the Van Ness – UDC Metro station. I went online, designed the card and hit submit. It said it would be ready around 1pm. A short while later I got an automatic message informing me that my cards were ready.

Unfortunately, when I arrived I was informed that the cards were not ready. I explained that they were promised by 1pm and I even received a message confirming that they were now ready.

John, the employee working that afternoon, told me the machine had been broken for a couple of days and would hopefully be fixed later that afternoon. I couldn’t understand why I was able to order them and even get confirmation and updates on the production of the cards if the equipment was working. That glitch needs fixed.

Needless to say I was upset and left with limited options to get these cards done as I would be traveling. John took the address of where I would be in Pennsylvania and said if the machine was fixed that day he would get them in the mail and maybe I’d receive them by Friday – when I needed them.

Well, the machine got fixed, John somehow got the cards to me in Pennsylvania on time and everything worked out. Thank you sir!

 

Watson Day 9

 

Dear Mr. Watson,

We met in November of 2013 when I ordered some custom greeting cards at the Walgreens where you work. The machine had broken and my cards were not ready, but you went out of your way to send them to me in Mechanicsburg, PA once he machine was fixed.

I was very thankful for the extra effort that you put forth and appreciate your professionalism and sincerity very much. Sorry I was a bit of an ass that day!
